Cashback and Coupons: When You Can Combine Them
Using a coupon and cashback on the same order is one of the most common ways to save, and one of the most common ways to end up with less than expected. The two things work in different ways, and a shop can allow one, both or neither. This guide explains how they interact and how to check before you pay.
How the two work
A coupon or discount code lowers the price at checkout. You type it in, or it is applied by a link, and the total goes down. Cashback does not touch the price. It is a share of the shop's commission, paid to your account after the order is confirmed. Because they act in different places, there is no technical reason why they cannot be combined. The reason they sometimes cannot is the shop's own rules and the way tracking works.
When combining usually works
- The code is a plain checkout code that the shop publishes itself, such as a welcome offer or a seasonal sale code.
- The shop states that cashback programmes are allowed with the offer.
- You reach the shop through the cashback link and only then enter the code by hand.
In that case you get the lower price and the cashback on the amount the shop confirms. Note that the cashback is usually calculated on what you actually pay after the discount, so a bigger discount means a slightly smaller cashback amount. The total is still normally better than either one alone.
When a code can cancel your cashback
The risk comes from codes that arrive through their own link. Some coupon sites open the shop through a tracking link of their own, and that click replaces the one from the cashback portal. The shop then credits the coupon site and not you. The same happens with browser extensions that offer to apply codes and then reset the tracking.
A second case is a shop that excludes cashback when a particular code is used. This is typical for influencer codes, employee codes or codes handed out in newsletters. The shop's terms usually say so, and you can find a short note on the shop page here when we know about it.
A safe order of steps
- Open the shop page on daily cashback and read the notes on offers and conditions.
- Click the shop button and wait until the shop has loaded.
- Add items to your basket. Do not open another coupon or cashback site now.
- At checkout, type a code only if our page lists it or the shop offers it itself. Avoid pop-ups from extensions that apply codes automatically.
- Finish the purchase in the same session.
What we show on shop pages
Each shop page has the cashback rate, offers we found with the time of the last check, and what we know about shipping and returns. We look at these every day, so the information is current, and we write down the conditions openly, including when cashback does not apply. Codes we list are those we found on the shop or in partner feeds; we do not claim that every code works for every basket, because shops decide that at checkout.
An example calculation
This is an example with made-up numbers. An order costs 120 USD. A code takes 10 percent off, so you pay 108 USD. If the cashback were 5 percent of the amount you pay, it would be 5.40 USD. Together you keep 12 + 5.40 = 17.40 USD against the original price. Without the code you would have 6 USD cashback on 120 USD. Combining is better here, but only because the tracking stayed intact.
Free shipping and minimum order values
Some offers have a minimum order value. If you add an item only to reach it, check that the total effect is still positive. Cashback on the extra item rarely makes up for buying something you do not need. Compare the final price, shipping and the return rules together.
If something goes wrong
If you used a code and the order never appeared in your account, report it through the missing cashback process. Our guide on missing cashback lists what to send. The terms of use state how we handle orders where the tracking was replaced.
