VPN and Software Subscriptions: Best Time to Buy
VPNs, antivirus tools, editing programs and other software are often sold as subscriptions. The first price is usually the part that gets advertised, and the renewal price is the part that gets noticed a year later. Timing a purchase well is partly about catching an offer, but mostly about understanding what you will pay in total. This guide covers both, together with the role of cashback.
Read the price in three parts
For every subscription, note three things: the price for the first term, the price when it renews and the length of the term. A long term is often cheaper per month but ties up more money at once. A short term is flexible but may cost more overall. Many providers display a monthly figure that is only valid if you pay for several years in advance. Calculate the total for the term and divide it yourself.
When do offers appear?
Software shops tend to run promotions around the same moments as other shops, such as the sale weekend in late November, the start of the year and mid summer. We cannot promise that a certain deal will return, because providers change their plans. A sensible rule is to wait a short while if you do not need the product today, and to buy straight away if you need it now. Paying a little more for a month does not matter much compared with a missing tool.
Cashback on subscriptions
Many software and VPN providers participate in affiliate programmes, so cashback is possible. Be careful with the conditions, as these are the usual exceptions:
- Renewals often earn nothing, only the first purchase counts.
- Some programmes pay only for new customers.
- Upgrades, add ons and gift cards can be excluded.
- A refund within the money back period cancels the cashback.
As an example of a listing, see the NordVPN page for the current conditions. For software tools, pages such as MiniTool and Wondershare show how a provider is described.
Free trials and refunds
A free trial that asks for a payment method will usually turn into a paid subscription unless you cancel. Put the end date in your calendar the day you start. A money back guarantee gives you time to test, but if you use it the order is cancelled and so is the cashback. Decide whether you really want the product before you buy, so that the refund remains a safety net and not a plan.
Check what you actually need
Compare features, not brand names. For a VPN this could mean how many devices are included, which operating systems work and what the provider says about its logging policy. For software, check the licence: one computer or several, one person or a family, perpetual or yearly. Cheap keys from unknown sellers are a risk, because they can be revoked. We do not sell licences ourselves, and we do not test products.
Compare the full picture
Our approach at daily cashback is to bring cashback, current offers and terms into one view and to check it daily. For subscriptions, terms matter more than usual: renewal price, cancellation method and refund period. A slightly higher cashback with a harsher renewal is not the better deal.
Steps for ordering
- Create your free account and log in.
- Open the provider from our page.
- Pause ad blockers and coupon tools during the order.
- Pay in one visit and keep the confirmation email.
- Write down the renewal date and how to cancel.
Tracking issues
A VPN may change your apparent location and sometimes interferes with tracking. Switch it off while you click through and pay, then switch it on again. If your order does not appear, read why cashback gets declined.
Switching and cancelling
Before you subscribe, find out how cancellation works. Can you do it in your account, or do you have to write to support? Does a cancelled plan run until the end of the paid term? Does the provider send a reminder before renewal? Providers that make cancellation hard are a poor choice, no matter how low the first price is.
If you already own a licence and want to upgrade, ask whether you must buy as a new customer. Sometimes a separate account is not allowed, and the cashback conditions may exclude existing customers.
Check the company behind the product
With a VPN you hand over your traffic to a provider, so the company matters more than the discount. Look at where it is based, what its privacy policy says, whether it has been audited by an outside party and how long it has been in business. Read independent reviews, but remember that some review sites earn commissions themselves. We are open about the fact that we also work with affiliate programmes, and we do not rate products.
For software, check the system requirements and whether updates are included in the price. A tool that stops working after the next operating system update is not a bargain at any price.
Payout
Confirmed cashback is paid by PayPal from 20 USD. Subscriptions often have a waiting period before confirmation, because of the refund window. We are an information portal; the contract is always with the provider.
