Booking.com vs Hostelworld: Which Fits, and Where Is Cashback Paid?

· 2026-09-23

Booking.com vs Hostelworld: for a payout on a hostel or budget stay, book through Booking.com, our listed partner for stays; Hostelworld is not on the list. Hostelworld has its own deposit model for dorm beds, and the differences are below. Status October 2026.

Booking on Booking.com with cashback

  1. Log in to daily cashback. The account is free.
  2. Open Booking.com at daily cashback and press the cashback button.
  3. In the new window, search your city and dates. Booking.com lists hostels among its stay types.
  4. Choose the rate. If your trip is not fixed, a rate with free cancellation protects the payout.
  5. Finish the reservation in that window.
  6. The entry waits as pending and is confirmed after the stay.

When the payout falls away

  • You cancel, since a cancelled stay is not counted.
  • You pick a non-refundable rate and cannot travel.
  • Cookies are refused or an ad blocker is active.
  • A coupon website joins the session after our click.
  • You reserve at Hostelworld, which is not on our list.

Who suits what

  • Booking.com suits you if one trip mixes hostels, hotels and apartments and you want the same payout route for each. It states that it charges no reservation fee, and any cancellation fee is set by the property.
  • Genius, Booking.com's free scheme, rewards repeat bookings: 5 bookings within 2 years unlock Level 2 and 15 unlock Level 3, each with a bigger discount on stays.
  • Hostelworld suits you if you only look for dorm beds and like paying a part online and the rest at the hostel. Its terms describe a deposit or the price of a non-refundable rate, collected for the hostel.
  • Hostelworld may add a flat booking fee for using the site, which its terms call non-refundable in all circumstances.
  • Its booking guarantee credits your whole deposit and adds a bonus towards a later booking if your reservation cannot be found at check-in.

What happens to a deposit if you cancel

Take a booking you have to cancel. On Hostelworld the amount collected stays with the hostel unless the hostel agrees otherwise, with two exceptions. With the Standard Flexible option the deposit returns to your Hostelworld account as a voucher in certain cases, and with the Free Cancellation option the deposit is refunded to the payment method you used, provided you cancel inside the stated window. The booking fee is not returned in either case.

On Booking.com the answer depends on the rate. A booking with free cancellation costs nothing to cancel. One that is no longer free, or non-refundable, may carry a fee, and the property keeps it.

For cashback the outcome is the same in both cases: a cancelled stay is not counted, so no payout follows. The difference is only what else you lose, and that is why the line on cancellation in the last booking step deserves a careful read.

One practical habit helps with both sites: before you confirm, find the line that says until when you can cancel and what it costs. Screenshot it. If your plans move later, you will know within seconds whether the money and the payout are safe.

A stay with a levy: what counts

The completed booking is the base, minus taxes, tourist levies and resort fees. Take several nights in a hostel in a city that charges a tourist levy: the bed price counts, the levy does not, and a night you cancel drops out. Since the rate can be adjusted, read it off the shop page on your booking day.
