Booking.com vs Trivago: Which Fits You, and Where Is Cashback Paid?
Booking.com vs Trivago: Booking.com is on our shop list and earns cashback, while trivago is a search tool without rooms of its own and earns none. So trivago can help you choose, but the booking should start from our page. Status October 2026.
Using both without losing the payout
- Search your city and dates on trivago and note the hotel you like.
- Close the trivago tab. Do not press the Booking.com deal there.
- Go to daily cashback, log in and open Booking.com at daily cashback.
- Press the cashback button, then look up the same hotel and the same dates on Booking.com.
- Reserve in this one session with cookies allowed.
- Your reservation is listed as pending; the stay is what confirms it.
Why the order matters
Cashback needs our click shortly before you book. A trivago deal sends you to the booking site by its own link, and a reservation made from there is not linked to your account. The price at Booking.com is the same either way, so the detour costs you a minute and nothing else.
Available here with cashback
Trivago notes itself that a price can change once you are redirected to the booking site. That is one more reason to trust the figure at the Booking.com checkout over the figure in the trivago list, whichever route you take. For a large booking, such as a week in a city or a family trip, the minute is well spent because the payout follows the booking value. For a single night on the road you may decide differently.
What can still cost you the payout
- You cancel. A cancelled stay is not counted.
- An ad blocker or a refusal of cookies interferes with the click.
- A coupon site of another provider is opened in between.
- The stay is altered so much that the provider handles it like a new booking.
Booking.com and trivago in a few lines
- Role. Trivago compares offers from hundreds of booking sites and sends you on; you pay at the booking site. Trivago says it cannot manage your reservation. Booking.com is such a booking site.
- Prices. Trivago shows the booking site's name next to each deal. It says its prices include taxes and extra charges, and also warns that a booking site may show a price without them. Booking.com says it charges no reservation fee.
- Cancelling. At trivago you are pointed to the booking site, whose contact details are in your confirmation email. At Booking.com a free-cancellation booking costs nothing to cancel, while a non-refundable one may carry a fee set by the property.
- Loyalty. Genius is Booking.com's free scheme with three levels. The first gives a 10 % discount on stays at participating properties once you sign in, and the higher ones are unlocked by bookings made within two years.
Use trivago when you cannot decide between many hotels. Go straight to Booking.com when you know where you want to sleep.
How a discount changes the base
Picture a booking made with a Genius discount. According to the shop page the payout follows the price you actually pay. Taxes, city levies, resort fees and cancelled stays are left out of that price. A discount therefore shrinks the base as well: you spend less, and the payout is worked out on the smaller figure.
The rate moves over time and is displayed on the shop page, so no number appears here. The timing stays fixed: the entry waits until the stay is behind you.
