Booking.com vs Hotels.com: Who Has the Cheapest Hotel Prices?
Booking.com vs Hotels.com: Who Has the Cheapest Hotel Prices? A blanket answer would be a guess. We look instead at what counts beyond the room price: cashback via our shop pages, loyalty discounts and what a cancellation does.
You can book a hotel on Booking.com or on Hotels.com, and next to the room price a second question matters: what comes back? This guide explains how cashback works with these two sites, when it is confirmed and what you must do so the booking is matched. We read the providers' own help pages, status October 2026.

How cashback comes about
You do not go straight to the hotel site. You start on the Booking.com page at daily cashback and continue from there to the provider. Your price stays the same; the provider pays a commission to us and we pass it on to you. We do not print a figure here because rates change. You see the current one on the shop page. Hotels.com also has a page at daily cashback; check the stores overview to see whether it is offered for your country.
For the booking to be matched you need a clean session: ad blocker off, no other comparison or voucher sites opened in between, and one go from start to finish. Otherwise the click can get lost.
When is it confirmed?
For hotels, cashback first shows as pending in your free account. It is confirmed after the stay, once the provider reports the trip as completed. Book in May, travel in September, and you will see the credit only after you leave. That is normal, not a fault.
If you cancel the booking, there is no cashback. That applies to both sites. So if your dates are fixed, a free-cancellation rate is the safer choice; it simply changes nothing when you do travel.
A practical case: you book a room in spring for autumn and open the shop page first. A pending entry shows up in your account shortly after. That is the sign that the booking was matched. If it is missing after a day, daily cashback support can help, ideally with the confirmation email of the hotel site at hand.
Differences that matter for cashback
Booking.com. By its help page, Booking.com does not take vouchers from magazines or other shops, so going through us does not cost you a saving. Cancellation fees are set by the property: nothing on free-cancellation bookings, possibly a fee on non-refundable rates. For your cashback it means that if you cancel, you get none.
Hotels.com. If you redeem a discount code there, the cashback can fall away. Work out both options before you decide. Hotels.com shows the exact cancellation and payment terms in the booking step for each offer.
Loyalty programme and cashback
Both sites run their own scheme. Booking.com calls it Genius: 10% off stays after sign-up, 10 to 15% after 5 bookings in 2 years, 10 to 20% after 15 bookings, each before taxes and charges and at participating properties. Hotels.com uses One Key with OneKeyCash and the tiers Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum; Silver asks for 5 trip elements a year, Gold 15 and Platinum 30.
The schemes hang off your account with the provider, while the cashback runs through us. Whether a discount always goes together with cashback is stated in the terms on our shop page. Look there before you plan around it.

What we recommend
We recommend Booking.com if you book without a voucher and want to use cashback and Genius together. Its terms can be read on the help page, and you can pay for the room at the property while the cashback is booked after the stay.
Hotels.com makes sense if you collect in a One Key account anyway. Then your stay counts for the programme and for the cashback, as long as you book without a discount code.
Whether one site is cheaper for your hotel only shows when you compare the total in the last step. Compare the same nights, breakfast and cancellation rule.
How to go about it
- Open the shop page and look at the rate.
- Ad blocker off, sign in to your free account, book without a discount code.
- Save the confirmation email and note the cancellation deadline.
- After the trip, check in your account that the credit shows as confirmed.
