Booking Carmel Limo: airport transfers, cancellation rules and cashback
Carmel is a New York car and limousine service that has been running since 1978. Its website sells airport transfers in New York and, through partner companies, rides in more than 350 cities abroad. This is a ride service, so there is no parcel shipping. What counts is where you can book, what extras get added to the fare, how cancelling works and how you pay.
Where you can book a ride
The booking box on the home page has three tabs: USA, Worldwide and By Airport. New York is the core: the airports listed are Newark (EWR), JFK and LaGuardia (LGA). The airport list also names Montreal (YUL), Vancouver (YVR), Toronto (YYZ), Paris (CDG, Orly and Beauvais), London (Gatwick, Heathrow and City) and Bangkok, Don Mueang and Phuket. Carmel says it works with affiliated providers in more than 350 world cities, so abroad your driver may come from a partner company. Prices are shown in US dollars on the quote tool.
Vehicles and luggage
Sedans take up to 3 passengers with 3 pieces of luggage and 3 carry-ons. Minivans seat up to 6 passengers with 4 pieces of luggage, large passenger vans up to 10 passengers and 10 bags, and stretch or sprinter limousines up to 14 passengers without bags. Buses carry from 14 to 40 people. Luggage that fits in the trunk is free of charge, but a bag that has to go inside the car adds a $10 surcharge. Travelling with a pet means booking a minivan and bringing a carrier. Car seats are not provided, and passengers under 18 need an adult with them.
Tolls and extras on the fare
The booking quote can include tolls, a meet-and-greet charge, wait time and extra stops if you add them when booking. On trips between Manhattan and JFK or LaGuardia a toll of about $7.46 is common, and the driver may pick the route by traffic and weather. Trips to or from Newark always carry tolls that start at $23.55. Round trips are charged each way, and outside New York City you pay the necessary tolls to and from the destination. Tips are at your discretion, except for charge accounts and prepaid reservations.
| Topic | What the site says |
|---|---|
| Free cancellation | Within 6 minutes of booking, or early enough before pickup |
| Late cancellation | Half of the basic fare is charged |
| No-show | Full basic fare |
| Luggage | Free in the trunk, $10 surcharge if inside the car |
| Phone | 1-866-666-6666, from abroad +1 212-666-6666 |
Cancelling a reservation
A booking made through the site can be cancelled free of charge within six minutes of the time you made it. After that the cut-off depends on the pickup: for addresses in the five boroughs you must cancel at least 21 minutes before pickup, outside New York City at least 51 minutes. Later cancellations cost 50 percent of the basic fare, which is the amount before tolls, tips and government fees are added. You cannot cancel at all within five minutes of the pickup time, and that counts as a no-show, just as not appearing within ten minutes of pickup does. A no-show is charged at the full basic fare.
Paying and getting a receipt
You can pay in the car with a credit card, which you must show to the driver, or prepay online, including for a guest travelling without you. Receipts are available from the Customer Care tab under Get Receipt. Carmel also runs a points programme and Car Cash that can pay for rides. If you lose something in a car, call the dispatcher right away; the FAQ mentions a minimum surcharge of $20 if the driver brings the item to you.
Cashback at Carmel
Open the CarmelLimo page at daily cashback, where the current rate (3.75%) is listed with the offers we check every day. Press the shop button and then reserve your ride on the website as usual. Your free account shows the cashback as open first and confirmed once Carmel has reported the booking. A cancelled or refunded ride reduces it again.
Tips before you book
- Book through the website after clicking from our page, not by phone, or the click cannot be tracked.
- Choose the vehicle by luggage, not only by passengers, to avoid the interior luggage surcharge.
- For Newark, expect the higher toll in your total.
- Do not mix in a code from another site, as it can replace the cashback click.
