Jalbum vs SmugMug: Which Photo Gallery Is Better?
Jalbum vs SmugMug: Which Photo Gallery Is Better? If you want to keep your galleries under your own control, we recommend Jalbum. You pay for a licence that does not expire, publish to your own web space or to jalbum.net, and our shop page gives you cashback on the purchase. SmugMug fits better when you want unlimited hosted storage and print sales in one subscription. Plans change, so read the current plan page before you pay. Status October 2026.
Cashback: Jalbum yes, SmugMug no
Our page Jalbum shows the current rate and is the start of your order. SmugMug is not listed with us, so a SmugMug subscription brings no cashback through daily cashback. Nothing is wrong with SmugMug because of that; it just has no cashback route here.

How a Jalbum purchase with cashback works
Click through from the shop page with your ad blocker paused, then pick a licence or storage plan and pay in a single visit. The price stays normal. Until Jalbum approves it, the order waits in your free account as pending. Cashback is based on the net order value after any voucher, without taxes.
Jalbum states that it gives a full refund within 30 days if you are unhappy for any reason. If you use that refund, the cashback for the order is gone as well, so test the software properly in the first days. A voucher code that our shop page does not mention can also affect eligibility.
What you actually buy
Jalbum is software for Windows, macOS and Linux. You drop in photos and videos, choose a skin, press Make and publish. The Standard licence is for non-commercial use, the Pro licence adds commercial use and a shopping cart in some skins. Both are full versions that never expire and include one year of updates and support, and your albums carry no ads. Free use covers small galleries of up to 24 images.
If you have no web space, Jalbum also sells storage on jalbum.net. The Premium account comes with 10 GB and the Power account with 100 GB, each with the matching licence included while the account is active, and you can pick storage in Europe or in the US.
SmugMug is a hosted service you subscribe to. Its plans are called Direct, Portfolio, Pro and Enterprise. All of them list unlimited photo storage, privacy controls and Lightroom integration. The Portfolio plan adds selling prints and digital downloads, and the Pro plan adds multiple custom price lists and packages. A 14 day free trial lets you try every feature.
Control, hosting and lock-in
With Jalbum the finished gallery is a set of web files. You can upload it by FTP to any host, so a move to another provider does not mean rebuilding your albums. SmugMug keeps your photos and pages inside its own platform, which is convenient for backups and delivery to clients but ties the gallery to the subscription.
Selling and client delivery
SmugMug has the more complete sales setup: print lab integration, automatic tax collection, client favouriting and download limits. Jalbum can sell prints and downloads through the cart in certain skins on a Pro licence or Power account, which suits a small shop rather than a full studio workflow.

Who should pick which
Hobby photographers and families. A one-off licence and the freedom to host anywhere is a good match. Jalbum is our pick here.
Small businesses and event photographers. If you only need client galleries and a modest shop, Jalbum Pro or Power does the job. For regular print sales to many clients, look closely at SmugMug.
Photographers with huge archives. Unlimited storage and Lightroom sync are SmugMug strengths. Jalbum counts storage per plan or per your host.
What we recommend
We recommend Jalbum for most people who just want a good-looking gallery they own: a licence that keeps working, hosting wherever you like, a 30 day refund and cashback through our shop page. Choose SmugMug when unlimited hosted storage and a complete selling setup matter more than owning the files on your own host.
