Buying Perfume for Less: Price per ml, Not Bottle Price
If you want to buy perfume for less, you quickly face a list of many bottles in different sizes and prices. 50 ml for 58 euros or 100 ml for 94 euros, a voucher here, free delivery there. At first glance that is hard to compare. A simple sum makes it comparable: you look not at the bottle price but at the price per millilitre.
Price per ml in two steps
Divide the final price by the volume. The result is what you pay for each millilitre of fragrance. A small sum with made-up numbers:
- 50 ml for 58 EUR: 58 divided by 50 is 1.16 EUR per ml.
- 100 ml for 94 EUR: 94 divided by 100 is 0.94 EUR per ml.
The large bottle costs 36 EUR more and is still cheaper, as long as you actually use it up. For a scent you wear rarely, the small bottle can be the better choice, because perfume does not stay fresh forever. Price per ml tells you the price, not your need. There is more on this in the perfumeprices guide further down.
What belongs in the final price
The comparison only works if you count the same things for every offer.
- The bottle price as listed.
- Delivery. A low bottle price with 6 EUR delivery can end up behind a slightly dearer offer with free delivery. How minimum order values play into this is covered in our guide Shipping Costs and Free Shipping Thresholds.
- The voucher. Count only what is actually deducted under its conditions.
- Customs and import tax for shops outside your country or region. More on that is in Buying from Overseas Shops: Customs, Taxes and the Real Price.
Then divide that final price by the millilitres. That is your comparison figure.
Voucher or cashback
A voucher lowers the price at once, cashback arrives later and on top. Whether both work together depends on the shop, and some conditions rule out cashback when a voucher is used. How to weigh this for your case is in the guide Cashback or Coupon: Which Saves More? For comparing bottles, the rule is: work out the final price per ml first, then add cashback afterwards as an extra benefit. There are shops where perfume or certain brands are excluded from cashback. That is stated on the shop page, and we deliberately name no rates here.
Sets and gift packs
Sets often include body lotion or a small extra. Subtract the value of the extras if you do not need them, and divide the rest by the millilitres of the fragrance. Then you can see whether the set is really cheaper than the single bottle. Gift packs are also covered in our guide Beauty and Fragrance: Gift Sets and Cashback.
A short checklist
- Is it the same type (eau de parfum, eau de toilette) and the same version?
- Does the bottle size match what you will use up?
- Are delivery and possible charges in the price?
- Does the voucher really apply to this fragrance?
- Did you use the cashback link in a browser and save the confirmation?
