Ordering wine from 8wines: shipping by country, duties, breakage and cashback
8wines is an online wine shop run from the Czech Republic that ships bottles by UPS to dozens of countries across Europe and a handful beyond. Wine is heavy and fragile, so the delivery rules do most of the work in deciding whether an order makes sense. This guide covers where 8wines delivers, what shipping costs, how duties are handled and what happens when a bottle breaks or you change your mind.
Where 8wines delivers
The shipping table lists most EU countries, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Iceland, Serbia, Montenegro, Georgia, Andorra, San Marino, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. The shop says it also delivers to many other places: write to the customer team and they arrange shipping for you.
Shipping costs and delivery time
Rates depend on weight, destination and insured value. The shop's table gives three price points per country, for 2, 6 and 12 bottles, in pounds, plus an average delivery time and the order value above which shipping is free. Here are a few examples:
| Country | Shipping for 2 / 6 / 12 bottles | Average time | Free shipping |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Shipping £10.68 / £11.85 / £13.22 | 3 days | Free shipping above £400 |
| Ireland | Shipping £11.23 / £12.61 / £14.56 | 5 days | Free shipping above £300 |
| Germany | Shipping £8.00 / £8.63 / £9.61 | 2 days | Free shipping above £170 |
| Austria | Shipping £6.99 / £8.41 / £9.88 | 1 day | Free shipping above £170 |
| Switzerland | Shipping £14.02 / £21.89 / £30.32 | 1 day | Free shipping above £450 |
| Japan | Shipping £71.66 / £120.25 / £163.85 | 3 days | No free shipping |
Standard shipping takes about 2 days across the EU on average. UPS Express is offered at checkout. After you enter your postal code, the checkout shows the exact shipping quote and an estimated delivery date.
Duties, VAT and customs
Orders to countries outside the EU and the UK are exempt from VAT, but shipping prices do not include local customs charges. For Switzerland, duties, import fees and VAT are already charged at checkout and 8wines handles customs with UPS, so the wine arrives duty and VAT paid. For the UK, the FAQ says 8wines collects VAT and UK wine duty at purchase, so you pay nothing extra on delivery. For other countries outside the EU and UK, the shop tells you to check with your local customs authority whether the wine can be imported, and you pay local duties and taxes yourself.
Returns, damage and cancellation
- Cancellation: you can cancel within 14 days of receiving the order without giving a reason. Contact the 8Wines helpdesk with your name, order number and purchase date. The shop refunds payments for the goods, excluding delivery, and you pay the return shipping. If you cancel before the order leaves the warehouse, delivery costs are refunded too.
- Damaged or defective wine: returnable within 14 days, as a refund or an exchange if available. Send it back in the original box.
- Transit damage: contact 8wines within 10 days of delivery with a description and pictures, including the original box with the transport label and the damaged bottle.
- Delayed or missing parcel: if an order is delayed beyond 14 days, the shop starts an investigation with the carrier on request. It can take up to 30 days, and ends in a reshipment or refund where possible.
The sale of alcohol to people under 18 is not permitted.
Payment
8wines accepts American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Apple Pay, SEPA and bank transfers. Credit card orders require 3DS authorisation.
Cashback
Open the 8wines page at daily cashback, where current offers are listed and checked every day, and the cashback rate is up to 3%. Press the shop button, then shop and pay as normal. In your free account the cashback shows as open and turns confirmed once 8wines has reported the order. A returned or cancelled order reduces the amount.
