Price Matching and Price Drops After Purchase

· 2026-10-08

You buy something, and a few days later it is cheaper. It happens to nearly everyone. Some shops will give you the difference back, some will match a competitor before you buy, and some will do neither. This guide explains the common policies, how to ask well and what happens to your cashback if the price changes. Policies vary widely, so the shop's current terms always come first.

Price matching versus price adjustment

These two terms are often mixed up. Price matching happens before or at the time of purchase: the shop agrees to meet a lower price from a named competitor. Price adjustment happens after purchase: the shop refunds the difference if its own price drops within a set period. Some shops offer one, some both, and many neither.

What price matching usually requires

Where a shop matches prices, there are typically conditions. The other seller must be a recognised retailer, the item must be identical, in stock and sold at the same terms, and clearance sales, marketplace sellers or limited-time doorbusters are often excluded. Shops may ask for a link or a screenshot. Read the exact wording on the shop's policy page and keep the proof you show.

Price adjustment after you buy

A shop that adjusts prices usually sets a window, such as a number of days from the order or delivery date. During this time, you contact customer service with your order number, and the shop credits the difference to your original payment method or as store credit. Exclusions are common: sale events, bundles, and items that were already discounted at purchase. If the policy is not clearly stated on the site, you can still ask politely. The answer is the shop's choice.

When there is no policy

If a shop does not adjust prices, you have another possibility: return the item within the return window and buy it again at the lower price. This works only if the return is free or cheap, if the item is still in stock and if you are comfortable with the extra effort. It also affects cashback, which we cover below. Weigh the saving against the hassle and the risk that the price rises again.

What happens to your cashback

If the shop refunds only the difference, the order stays and your cashback is usually recalculated on the new net value, which can mean a slightly smaller reward. That is a normal consequence of paying less. If you return the item and re-buy, the first order is reversed, so the first reward is cancelled. The second order only earns cashback if you click through our shop page again before you buy. Our guide on how cashback works step by step shows the order of events.

It is worth remembering that a lower price with a smaller reward still leaves you with the lower total, so the adjustment is usually worth asking for.

Waiting for a better price

Tracking prices is sensible for bigger purchases. Note the current price, watch for the usual sale periods and decide in advance the amount you are willing to pay. For something you need now, waiting is not always worth it. If you are unsure, buy where the return policy is generous. That keeps your options open without needing a price-adjustment promise.

Coupons that appear after you buy

A new discount code after your purchase is a common source of regret. Most shops will not apply it retroactively, but it costs nothing to ask. Be careful about cancelling and re-ordering to use it: you may lose the tracking on the new order. Click through again first, and avoid mixing in extensions that overwrite the tracking.

How to ask

  1. Check the policy page for price adjustment and its time limit.
  2. Gather your order number, the price you paid, the new price and a screenshot of the current page.
  3. Contact the shop by email or chat, politely and briefly.
  4. Ask for the refund to the original payment method.
  5. Keep the answer in writing.

Seasonal patterns worth knowing

Prices often fall around big sales weeks, at the end of a season and when a new model arrives. If you buy shortly before such a period, a price adjustment policy becomes more valuable, and you should read its time limit with care. If you buy during a sale, the policy may not apply at all, because many shops exclude sale items from adjustments. Knowing the rhythm of a shop can matter more than any single trick.

Also consider that a drop of a few dollars is rarely worth lengthy emails, while a large drop on an expensive item usually is.

Frequently asked questions

Will a shop refund me if the price drops after I buy?
Some do within a set period, many do not. Check the shop's policy and ask politely if it is unclear.
Does a price adjustment change my cashback?
Usually the reward is recalculated on the lower net amount, so it can shrink slightly.
Is returning and re-buying a good trick?
Only if returns are free and the item is in stock. The first reward is cancelled, and the second order needs a fresh click through our page.
What do shops usually exclude from price matching?
Marketplace sellers, clearance items, limited-time sales and out-of-stock offers are common exclusions.
Can you get a shop to match a price?
No. We are an information site and do not set or negotiate shop policies.
