PrivateVPN vs Mullvad: Which VPN Is Cheaper?

· 2026-09-23

PrivateVPN vs Mullvad: which VPN is cheaper? It depends on how long you commit. Month to month, Mullvad's flat rate of €5 is the lower price, while longer plans with a discount favour PrivateVPN. On a long plan, PrivateVPN comes out cheaper per month, and it is the one we recommend: it has a store page on daily cashback, allows 10 connections and offers port forwarding. Prices on both sites move, so this is the picture for October 2026.

Where cashback is available

PrivateVPN has its own page here: PrivateVPN on daily cashback. The page shows the rate in force and the terms for new subscriptions. Mullvad has no entry in our shop list, which means a Mullvad subscription pays you nothing through us. Its pricing page is clear, so it remains a fair option on its own merits.

How to subscribe with cashback

Sign up for a free account, open the PrivateVPN page and continue to the checkout from there. Keep cookies on, switch the ad blocker off and do not visit coupon or comparison sites during the order. The purchase then shows up as pending in your account.

The cashback is confirmed once PrivateVPN has accepted the order and the refund window has passed. This is where the money-back guarantee matters. PrivateVPN offers 30 days, and a refund also ends the cashback. Use the trial period to test, but expect nothing back on the cashback side if you cancel.

Price: month to month versus long plans

PrivateVPN lists plans of 1, 3, 12 and 36 months on its German-language page. One month costs €10.39 including VAT, three months work out to €6.20 a month, and the 36-month plan with its launch discount is shown at €2.08 a month. Mullvad prints a single rate: €5 a month including VAT, whether you pay for one month, a year or longer. Mullvad says its rate has stayed the same since 2009.

So the break-even is simple. If you plan to stay for a year or more and take the discount plan, PrivateVPN is the lower monthly cost. If you want to pay for a few months and leave, Mullvad's flat rate is cheaper than PrivateVPN's one-month plan.

Features and devices

PrivateVPN names more than 200 servers in 63 countries, 10 simultaneous connections, port forwarding with at least one open port, and apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Kodi. It describes itself as a no-log service under Swedish law.

Mullvad allows 5 devices per account and does not offer port forwarding. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, uses WireGuard, and gives you an anonymous account number instead of an email address. Its Mullvad Browser is free of charge.

Support and setup

PrivateVPN advertises free remote help and installation, plus a chat bubble on the site and an email address for support. Mullvad runs a help centre with guides and answers, and its support team answers by email. If you are new to VPNs, PrivateVPN's offer to help with the installation may save you an evening.

Money-back guarantee and payment

PrivateVPN promises 30 days for new customers, refunds within 5 business days after confirmation, and asks for a reason. Mullvad offers 14 days, except for cash payments. Mullvad also accepts cash by post, cards, PayPal and several bank transfers, while PrivateVPN shows its payment options in the order step.

Who should choose what

Long-term users on a budget: PrivateVPN. The 36-month plan has the lowest monthly cost of the two, and cashback comes on top.

Households with many devices: PrivateVPN, because 10 connections cover phones, laptops and a TV box.

Short-term or flexible users: Mullvad. One rate, no long commitment, and it is the cheaper way to pay for a month or two.

People who prefer anonymous sign-up: Mullvad. You get an account number and can pay in cash.

Our recommendation

Pick PrivateVPN if you want a long plan, more devices and a cashback route. Pick Mullvad if you value one flat rate and anonymous accounts. Before you decide, read how we compare another pair in NordVPN vs PrivateVPN.

  • PrivateVPN carries cashback here, Mullvad does not.
  • A refund inside the guarantee period cancels the cashback.
  • Open the PrivateVPN page before you pay.
