Booking.com vs Airbnb, which one gives money back on holiday rentals? We list Booking.com as a shop with cashback and Airbnb not. The price of the property itself moves on both. So it pays to look at what is really paid in the end and what comes back from it. We recommend Booking.com, because there you can combine cashback and Genius. We checked the rules in October 2026.
The route to cashback
The Booking.com shop page shows the current rate, the offers and the date of the last check. A button leads from there to the provider. Your price does not change, the provider pays us a share and we pass it on. We do not list Airbnb, so a booking there earns no cashback from us.

How it runs
Begin on the shop page, not in an old window. Ad blocker off, no other comparison or voucher sites in between, then book in one session. The cashback first shows as pending in your free account and is confirmed once the provider reports the trip as completed. For accommodation that is after the stay.
Cancelling and prepayments
Anyone who cancels gets no cashback. At Booking.com the property sets the cancellation fee, and some ask for a prepayment. If you prepaid and then cancel, none of it counts for cashback. With open plans, choose a rate with free cancellation. At Airbnb the host sets the rule, which changes nothing about our recommendation, as there is no cashback there anyway.
What to count with holiday rentals
Apartments and holiday homes often add more to the price than hotels do: final cleaning, deposit, tourist tax, bed linen. Some of it is paid only on site, and that is mostly not part of the amount the provider reports for your cashback. So read the house rules. On Airbnb the service fee and host fees go into the price, while the Booking.com help says no reservation fee is charged.
Genius and cashback together
The free Genius scheme starts after sign-in with ten percent off at participating properties. Level 2 is within reach after five bookings in two years, Level 3 after fifteen. Sign in before booking and go through the shop page, and both run in parallel. The discount lowers the price on which cashback is based, so do not expect the sum of both percentages.
Crossed-out prices
If you see a crossed-out price on Booking.com, the help page says it is the third-highest price the property charges around your arrival day under the same conditions. That does not amount to a saving against Airbnb or other sites. For your cashback only the amount you pay counts, not the crossed-out figure.
Why Booking.com comes first
Our recommendation has a simple reason: through us you can get money back at Booking.com and not at Airbnb. On top, the Booking.com help pages describe price, payment and cancellation cleanly. Anyone who still prefers Airbnb has good reasons, such as wanting private hosts. Then our advice stands without cashback: compare the total price.
Before you click book
A short check is worth it. Are you signed in so that Genius applies? Do nights, party size and room or flat match? Have you read the house rules, above all on children, pets and arrival time? And is the cancellation deadline with its time of day noted? Ticking these off avoids the usual annoyances and secures your claim to the cashback.
After booking
Keep the confirmation email until the cashback is confirmed. Check names and dates at once, since corrections are simplest early on. A pending entry should appear in your daily cashback account after a short time. If the trip changes through a rebooking, the amount on which cashback is calculated can change. If it is cancelled, the cashback falls away completely.

Tips
- Sign in before you click book, otherwise Genius does not apply.
- Put the cancellation deadline and its time of day in your calendar.
- If the pending entry is missing after a day, write to daily cashback support with the confirmation email.
- Ask Booking.com properties for the invoice before you leave, as only the property issues it.
