Booking.com vs Expedia: Who Has the Cheapest Hotel Prices?
Booking.com vs Expedia: Who Has the Cheapest Hotel Prices? A blanket answer would be a guess. We look instead at what counts beyond the room price: cashback via our shop pages, loyalty discounts and what a cancellation does.
Booking.com and Expedia are among the best-known hotel sites. When it comes to money back they differ clearly with us: Booking.com has a shop page at daily cashback, Expedia currently has none. That does not make Expedia worse. It only means we cannot hold out cashback for it. This guide covers what you can expect on each site, status October 2026.

Where cashback exists and where not
You find Booking.com at Booking.com at daily cashback. The current rate is there, and your booking starts there. We do not list Expedia. If you book through Expedia, you get no cashback from us and need no special route. What Expedia rewards you with itself hangs on its own programme, One Key. More on that below.
How a Booking.com booking with cashback runs
Always start on the shop page, not in an old browser window. The ad blocker should be off and you open no other comparison or voucher sites in between. Then you book in one session. The price is the same as without us. The credit first shows as pending in your free account.
Cashback is confirmed after the stay, not at booking. Months can lie between booking and departure, and the entry stays pending in that time. If you cancelled, the cashback falls away.
Cancellation and cashback are linked
Booking.com states on its help page that the property sets the cancellation fee. A free-cancellation booking carries none, a non-refundable rate may. You can ask through the booking whether the property will waive it, and dates cannot be changed on such rates. For your cashback only one thing matters: the trip has to happen.
If you are not sure the trip will work out, take the flexible rate. The room price is then often higher than on the non-refundable one, but you risk neither the room nor the cashback.
Loyalty schemes: Genius and One Key
Genius on Booking.com costs nothing. After sign-up you get 10% off stays, based on the price before taxes and charges. After 5 bookings in 2 years you reach Level 2 with 10 to 15%, after 15 bookings Level 3 with 10 to 20%. Levels 2 and 3 include perks such as breakfast and upgrades, per Booking.com. The discounts apply at participating properties only.
Expedia has One Key, a programme with OneKeyCash for later bookings and the tiers Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Silver needs 5 trip elements a year, Gold 15 and Platinum 30. An element counts from 25 US dollars excluding taxes and fees. Note that when you use Expedia, collecting happens there without our cashback.
On Booking.com you can combine Genius and cashback in one stay. Whether and how they affect each other in the calculation is in the terms on the shop page. Look there before planning a big trip.
Payment
On Booking.com you pay at the property or in advance, depending on the property. Some ask for a deposit up to the full amount. Your cashback does not depend on that; it hangs on the stay, not on the way you pay. The payment rule is in the confirmation. Expedia shows the exact payment terms in the booking step for each offer.

What we recommend
If you want to pick up cashback, Booking.com is the right place: it is listed with us, Genius runs alongside, and the terms are set out on the help page. That is our recommendation for most hotel trips.
Expedia can suit you if you already have a One Key account there and collect credit. Then there is no cashback from us, but you have the benefit of your own programme. Which of the two costs less for your hotel only shows when you compare the final amount for the same nights.
Quick takeaways
- Cashback with us exists for Booking.com, not for Expedia.
- Credit after the stay; it falls away on cancellation.
- Always start from the shop page, ad blocker off, book in one session.
- Genius is the provider's own scheme and runs next to the shop page.
