The plans side by side
NordVPN offers Basic, Complete and Ultra. The device count is the same in every tier, up to 10. The extras grow with the tier: antivirus and protection against scam calls and messages, a password manager and cloud storage come from Complete.
ExpressVPN names its tiers Basic, Advanced and Express Pro. Here the device count grows too: 10, 12 and 14 simultaneous connections. The pricing page names servers in 113 countries. Advanced includes the ExpressKeys password manager and a holiday.com eSIM, among other things; the top tier includes the dedicated IP and the ExpressAI assistant.
Both show the starting price alongside the renewal price. ExpressVPN states the yearly follow-on price after the first 15 months, NordVPN puts it right at the plan. Work out both before you commit.
Guarantee, payment and cashback
NordVPN gives 30 days on the first purchase; under its terms a renewed term can no longer be returned that way. ExpressVPN also gives 30 days, for new subscribers according to its terms, and not on renewals. Anyone who has already received a refund there can be refused a second one.
If you pay in cryptocurrency, both refund in the same currency. ExpressVPN switches automatic renewal off for payment methods such as Bitcoin, so you have to watch the end of the term yourself.
For your NordVPN cashback: if you use the guarantee, it falls away. A discount code picked up on a third-party site may put it at risk as well; the details for NordVPN are on the shop page.
Privacy and technology
Both providers describe their technology on their own pages. ExpressVPN names its in-house protocol Lightway, a built-in speed test and checks by third parties, which it places at PwC, Cure53 and KPMG; they are said to confirm the no-logs policy and the TrustedServer technology. NordVPN points on its pricing page to post-quantum encryption and to very fast connections, backed by measurements the provider names.
Those are statements from the makers. For your decision it is more practical to ask what you need every day: does the app run on your router or TV, is the country you want in the list, and do you get on with the handling? Both give you 30 days to try, so use that thoroughly.
If you already use ExpressVPN, switching costs you nothing but the rest of the term, because a refund is only possible in the first month.
