HelloSafe travel insurance comparison: how it works, when to buy and cashback

· 2026-09-23

HelloSafe is not a shop with parcels and delivery times. It is a comparison and brokerage site for travel insurance, run from Rennes in France. You enter your trip, compare plans from several insurers and buy online, with the certificate sent by email. For a service like this, the questions that matter are different: who can use it, what the comparison costs, when you must buy and how claims work. This guide covers them.

What HelloSafe offers

The site says it compares more than 70 plans from over 40 insurers and has operated since 2019 for travellers heading to more than 190 countries. Trip types include leisure, annual multi-trip, Schengen visa, trip cancellation only, working holiday visa, study and internship, au pair, group travel, expat, digital nomad and cruise. Example plans on the home page are underwritten by insurers such as IMA Assurances, AIG, MGEN, Mutuaide and Axa. Rates in the examples are refreshed every 24 hours and apply to a sample trip, so your own quote will differ.

Where you can use it

The site is available in many languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese. At daily cashback, HelloSafe has pages for Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Sweden. The link below leads to the French page, the company's home market.

How buying works

  • Enter destination, dates, number of travellers and purpose of the trip. The form takes about 30 seconds.
  • Filter the plans by coverage, price and limits, and read what is covered.
  • Pay online. The certificate arrives by email in under two minutes and, according to the site, is valid for visa applications.

The comparison itself is free and without obligation, and no sign-up is needed. The premium is whatever the chosen plan costs for your trip. Advisors answer Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 18:00 Central European Time.

Rules to know before you pay

Insurance has to be bought before departure, generally at least 24 to 48 hours before the start date, so you cannot add it after the trip has begun. For a Schengen visa the site names a minimum cover of €30,000 for medical costs and repatriation, valid in all Schengen countries for the whole stay. HelloSafe also notes that insurance included with a credit card often has low limits for medical costs. The site puts them at roughly €30,000 to €150,000 and adds that the trip must be paid with that card and last 90 days at most. A dedicated policy is recommended for long stays or remote destinations.

To file a claim, contact your insurer's assistance line right away and keep all receipts and supporting documents. Most policies include COVID-19 cover for medical costs and repatriation, while cancellations linked to COVID-19 may have specific conditions. Read the policy conditions of your chosen plan for cancellation and withdrawal terms before you pay.

Cashback with daily cashback

Open the HelloSafe page at daily cashback to see the current rate (5%) next to the offers we check daily. Press the shop button, then compare and buy as normal. In your free account the cashback shows as open and becomes confirmed once HelloSafe has approved the purchase. If a policy is cancelled or refunded, the amount is deducted again.

Practical tips

  • Start the comparison from the daily cashback button and finish the purchase in the same visit.
  • Compare the exclusions and the limits, not just the price.
  • Do not click through other cashback or voucher sites while you shop, since a later click can replace the first one.
